BLOGGER, ENTREPRENEUR, MOTHER AND WIFE, MONIKA HIBBS INVITES US INTO HER HOME FOR BREAKFAST.
This past summer, we were invited to the home of blogger Monika Hibbs and her family; husband Troy and one-year-old son Liam Romeo. If you’re not already reading her blog MH by Monika Hibbs (formerly known as The Doctor’s Closet), you may be one of the 60,000 people following her on Instagram. Known for her clean aesthetic and distinct style, Monika inspires others through her daily life, from decorating her son’s quaint nursery to styling a backyard garden wedding party.
Sitting at the dining table for a casual morning breakfast, we learn more about Monika and Troy. The couple met in high school and didn’t date till years later, when Monika started med school in Poland (hence the original blog name, The Doctor’s Closet). Troy visited Monika on five different occasions, travelling together to cities like Prague, London and Italy. And then one evening in Paris, Troy popped the question with a sparkling Eiffel Tower as the backdrop. The couple just celebrated their five year anniversary.
“I loved medicine, but realized the lifestyle wasn’t for me,” Monika shares, “about three and a half years ago, I started the blog.” With readership growing quickly throughout the years, Monika was able to parlay the hobby into something much more than she ever dreamed of, including television appearances, partnerships with major brands and her own eCommerce store, Shop by Monika, a curated online store with Monika’s favourite things.
“I’m getting a lot of mom’s saying ‘you’re an inspiration’, you’re working from home, you have a business and you are a mom,” Monika tells us. “You can be there for your baby and children and still live your dreams. Being an inspiration to other moms is the best part of what I do.” Working on the blog and online store takes up 5-7 hours a day, seven days a week for the busy stay-at-home mom. “I don’t want people to think I have it all together,” Monika says, “if I don’t have to leave the house, I’m not going to put makeup on that day, I’m going to have my hair messy. And sometimes I’m up till 2 am responding to emails or packing orders.” Asked about the perception of the perfect life portrayed on social media, she quickly responds, “of course, I have a messy room in my house, it just won’t be up on Instagram!”
The home is a white sanctuary, as Monika describes it, designed by her good friend and cousin Stephanie Jean of Stephanie Jean Design. Shortly after our visit, the Hibbs moved out of this home, we were lucky enough to be one of the last shoots. Now building their new dream, we had to ask for a sneak preview. “It’s a much bigger property, there’ll be big doors to the yard,” Monika divulges, “white cabinets and marble in the kitchen, great light fixtures and wallpaper and drapery. Those are my go-to’s.” We’ll, along with your readers and followers, be anxiously waiting!
