ALL THINGS SWEET: SUGAR PLUM SISTERS
ABBOTSFORD BLOGGERS PAM RATZLAFF AND LAUREL EDWARDS SHARE THEIR LOVE OF FASHION AND STYLE WITH THEIR CHILDREN AS THEY GET BACK-TO-SCHOOL READY.
For two years, Pam Ratzlaff and sister Laurel Edwards have been giving their readers a peek inside their lives on their blog Sugar Plum Sisters. From sharing recipes in their kitchen (buttery croissants), interior design makeovers (we fell in love with Laurel’s new “Pinterest-worthy” home office), travel (the sisters just returned from a blogger conference in San Francisco) and fashion (their closets are massive and to-die-for). After spending ten years in the interior design field, the sisters were looking to try something new, “people would ask us where to go, where to eat, what to try,” Pam explained, “Laurel and I started talking, we have all this stuff that we love, maybe there’s other people who want to hear about it. We talked about it for almost two years, we said, we need to do this!” After visiting the blog, you’ll be glad they did.
We caught up with Pam and Laurel at their Abbotsford homes, the sisters are not only best friends, but also neighbours, living next door to each other on a sprawling 95-acre estate. There are four homes on the family compound (the sister’s parents and brother are also neighbours), a man-made lake and 36-acres of glass greenhouses for the family business, Greenhouse Delights. Living so close to each other makes it easy for the sister’s children to hang out. Pam and Laurel each have three children, Pam’s two daughters Berkeley and Dylan and son Maguire and Laurel’s two daughters Alexis and Melina and son Lincoln.
With back-to-school on the horizon, we were curious what Pam and Laurel themselves wore on the first day of school. “It was Esprit, a striped sweater, it was emerald green and dark purple with purple or green cords. All perfectly matched,” Pam shared excitedly, “it was the first day of school and probably 90 degrees.” “Mine was an Esprit navy and geometric sweater with navy cords. I was looking pretty hot to trot,” giggled Laurel. Oh the 80’s!
Fast forward to 2013, we asked Berkeley (14-years old), Alexis (14-years old) and Dylan (12-years old) what was on the top of their shopping lists for back-to-school. It was unanimous, “a great pair jeans”, skinny cut for Berkeley and Dylan and boot-cut for Alexis. “You’ve got to start with a great pair of jeans,” Laurel chimes in, “Melina (12-years old) loves her printed denim, like a coloured snakeskin printed jegging. She’s really fashion forward.” As for the boys, “Lincoln (9-years old) likes button-down shirts with elbow patches and he rolls up the sleeves,” Laurel explains. “Mac (10-years old) is very geek chic”, adds Pam, “for hockey the boys have to wear button-down shirts and ties. Mac has a chambray shirt and will wear a funky fluorescent pink tie.” It is clear style runs in the family.
Even with a busy household and building the Sugar Plum Sisters empire (their dream is to one day release a book or host a TV show), the sisters make time to give back to the community. One cause close to their hearts is Matthew’s House, a respite care home for children with special needs. Named after their friend’s son who passed away three years ago, Pam and Laurel will be helping host a fundraiser at Mt. Lehman Winery on September 14.
